ROBERT LEPAGE

Gaëtan (Patient Zéro)

A multidisciplinary artist, Robert Lepage is an actor, filmmaker, playwright, and theater director all at once. Hailed by international critics, his original, contemporary, and unconventional works, inspired by recent history, transcend borders and challenge the norms of playwriting, particularly through the use of new technologies.

Gaetan (Patient Zero): A theatrical production that intertwines Robert Lepage’s personal memory with our collective memory centered on the figure of Gaëtan Dugas, who was long, and wrongly, labeled as “Patient Zero” of the AIDS epidemic.

The production seeks to create a dialogue between different time periods, where the perspective of a mature man intersects with that of the carefree youth of the 1980s and the contemporary fragility revealed by COVID-19.

The goal is to restore a human and nuanced voice to Gaëtan Dugas, to move beyond the reductive myth of “patient zero,” and to examine our collective relationship to fear and memory.
